Solent Motoring Group was established in 1993 after a management buy out of the Citroen franchise in Portsmouth.
It quickly established a dominant presence in the local market place as a franchisee that was fun to deal with and that liked to deal.
Based on the theory that customers do not enjoy buying cars the Managing Director, Mike Miller and co-director Chris Hockey set about to create a successful new model by which his other dealerships would have a template to follow. Obviously we needed to make a profit to remain in business, but we felt no need for the "cloak & dagger" approach adopted by the mainstream Motor Trade for so many years.
By dealing with customers in a more open manner, often showing what we paid and agreeing on a mark up, customers left happier knowing they had paid a fair price for the goods.
This led to a lot of "word of mouth" recommendation and it was not long before the Nissan main agent for Portsmouth was taken into the fold.
Before long Solent Citroen and Hilsea Nissan were retailing around 800 New cars and 1000 Used a year. The Used car numbers consisted of a high degree of Marques that we were not agents for but due to our "Price to Sell" philosophy customers found us more competitive than other local main agents for that marque and so happily purchased them from off our forecourt.
Our reputation spread to the Business community and an impressive Fleet operation was developed to cope with the new demand.
In March 2003 we opened Solent Mazda, adding yet another prestigious marque to our list of dealerships.
To aid brand identity, our Nissan franchise was renamed as "Solent" in August 2005.
We will continue to grow and to look for more opportunities to do things better and in the meantime, if we have the opportunity to do business with you, we hope you will find the experience an enjoyable one.
